5S is a methodology for creating and maintaining an organized, clean, high performing workplace. The acronym or mnemonic refers to five Japanese words starting with the letter “s:”
Seiri / Sort –clearly distinguish need items form the unneeded items and eliminate the latter. Seiton / Store – keep needed items in the correct place for easy and immediate retrieval. Seiso / Shine – keep the workplace orderly and clean. Seiketsu / Standardize – repeat sort, store and shine on a regular predictable basis Shitsuke / Sustain – make 5S the habit or the culture
Benefits include a safer workplace, increased pride in the products and services created in the workplace, improved quality and efficiency.
